Dear ironbutt2:

I need your spot check please on this special request from JJ - Biker57, he was looking for a Harley Davidson Valves Adjustment. That's the work I did on his Engine, step by step. If you need more clarification, don't hesitate to ask me. We'll see what we can do to provide a Great Customer Service:

First of all: To adjust the valves on your Ironhead, the engine must be stone cold.
2- I want to adjust the tappets so that you have zero backlash on the cold engine.
3- As the engine heats up, the cylinder and heads expand upward creating valve lash in the valve train.
4- This is why I want zero lash with the engine cold.
5- If I get the valves set too tightly, it'll hold a valve open ever so slightly and make starting difficult. That's why I need all of my attention, concentration and use the right tool at the right moment. This is a very delicate operation!!!!
6- To adjust your valves, I need to bring one piston to TLC on the compression stroke, both valves closed with tappets in their lowest position.
7- Let's Pop the pushrod covers loose and loosen the lock nut on one of the tappets.
8- And now, I need to Adjust the top part of the adjuster outwards until the pushrod can no longer be turned with my fingers.
9- Now... it's time to turn the lock nut down but don't don't worried, I would not lock it yet.
10- Gradually I will turn the top adjuster downward until I can spin the pushrod with my finger and finish locking the lock nut.
11- Let's make a final recheck for the pushrod to see if it still spins but has no up and down movement. I'm looking for stabilisation.....and a very smooth sounds...
12- Don't worry! I will give the same attention with the other pushrod on that cylinder.
13- Remember this: it's always better to get the pushrods adjusted slightly loose rather than slightly tight.
14- It might rattle a bit more but it'll start easier as well. And that's the result I'm really looking for it, easier to start and more inner Powerful!
15- Final step: I'll put the pushrod tubes back together and then do the same thing with the other cylinder.

I'm pretty satisfied about the result. I'm looking for JJ's comment. More to follow.....!!!

That should get his motor running. If the valve train uses mechanical lifters (as opposed to hydraulic) you should set the valve lash per spec using a feeler gauge. If they are hydraulic lifters you need to be able to rotate the push rod and have a very slight ability to push the rod down.

You really don't want to see the result of not having adequate room in the valve train for the components to expand.

I need to use the lift to raise the chassis before I can have access to the important hardware.
Why are we calling that "Important hardware".... would you tell me ironbutt2....
That part I know very well, removing the exhaust to clear the tank...:-))
OMG, that lift is so useful.... I really like how it works..... and let's see what happen now... if I'm removing the fasteners and lower the tank..... Before disconnecting one of the precious various lines...just need to make sure, I'm not touching a sensitive lines that I'm not supposed.

O.K. now I think I have a different picture...with the tank down, the perspective is very different.. so...you're sure what you're doing.... I need to trust you at this point, before connecting that directly at the pump...but I'm sure your judgement is pretty good on this matter! I Love the feeling of using the compressed air to blow the dirt and debris from around the orifices. I never used before a brass punch to loosen the retaining ring.... Let's try another time to rotate and tilt the pump the remove thru the hole.....it was not easy first time.... but I never give-up.... I know there is always a solution and with your Great Help & Support, I'll found the right position.

I turned the ignition to run as requested and the meter indicated me the very High Voltage to the pump. I think it needs to cool down a little bit and I'll make another test drive tomorrow.

Is there an emergency fuel shut off switch, or if I suspect your fuel pump is out.
What are the steps I should take first before I drop the tank and replace it.
My fuel pump is accesible from the rear seat area interior if a test can be made.
What would you recommand about this sensitive & delicate question..... we definitely need to touch it with the proper tools like you said in your previous recommandation.

Let's see all the "Technical Aspect" & Possibility:

1) Pick the appropriate special tool with permissible device parameters.
2) Simulate the circuit using the SPICE models of the chosen devices.
3) If the simulation results are not agreeable i.e. if they do not meet the design
specifications, then go to step 1.
4) If the simulations results are good i.e. meet the design specifications, check out
for the packaging type of each discrete single component.
5) Check if the Layout of the Pump is the right size than the proposed dimensions.
7) If yes then rearrange the layout of the Pump before disconnecting the lines from it, to fit in the proposed size.
8) If it still does not fit, we have to go back to step 1.
9) Best part of it: We have to test the circuit.
10) In conclusion: Compare simulated and measured results.

As a Special Mechanic's Helper, I'm working on that issue and I reallyt think we should look carefully for the valve clearances, or the engine may need a professional valve job performed. Let's try First!
Also, step II, I'm planning to check for loose valve seats. The valves are the hardest working parts in any 4-cycle engine. They need "Special" attention & care too. Unfortunately, so many people are ignorant or know nothing about the valves, how they work or their purpose. Come closely and let's try to work on it together!
The valve face will more than the seat because the moving part always wears more than the stationary part. And main thing that cause valve face wear on the exhaust valve is a worn guide, which cause the face to scrape against the seat upon closing, and/or carbon deposits being lodged between the face and seat. The intake valve face wears from guide wear also and/or either lack of an air filter or not frequently using a new air filter. Clogged filters can cause microscopic dust particles to penetrate the filter and enter the combustion chamber.

richard.... could you please hold your grease gun for a min..... I'll let you know when times come for that tools...:-))

I'm holding my grease gun..but I hear a valve tapping..it need lubrication...so it will seat properly ....bend over the engine Mirella...let me look down your overalls to see if you have panties on...hmmm can I hold your socket wrench while you listen....and can I reach down and rub your ass.....I mean pour gas in your engine compartment......damn I wish I went to a trade school and worked more with ...tools !!!!!!!!!!

Mirella:(it could be that....but actually is a compression's issue....but not for long....just release the valve and look what happen.... no needs at all for lubrication.... look the liquid is so transparent, good taste, smooth, great consistance.... crystal clear....)

It is a new Ford I6-300 short block. Built by a pro in South Carolina. He said the pistons should raise the compression half a point. I built the head and know that it is good. It has run on the previous short block. Biggest valve that fit in the cylinder with roller rockers. Big block Chevy rocker studs and push rods to get the geometry right.

I have checked the timing 6 times. I even tried putting the wires on 180 out as a test without luck. Running a Davis Unified Ignition and verified all the ground plane. I am seeing a hot spark from plug. The cam is the questionable item. I know the gas is old but I added 5 gallons of fresh gas and a bottle of 104 octane booster.

I am going to pull the gas line off from the tank at the fuel pump and run a line into a gas can of fresh gas. I have been using fresh gas poured into the carb and ether. If that doesn't work, I am going to pull the aftermarket cam out and put the stock cam back in.

Hi Cal here , without seeing whats happening and you have spark, it sound like a fuel problem possable carb. (floats possable stuck or jets closed ) does it fire when you put fuel down carb?

I figured that since I had everything apart it was a good tie rebuild the carb. It is a Holley 390cfm 4 bbl. It works fine. It has tried and come close to starting twice.

Buddy of mine from Alabama who has worked on cars since he was a kid in the '50s and I talked about this blessed problem all the way from Mobile to Sebring Fl. He is pretty sure I have hit all the obvious things and the less than obvious.

Thinking it has to be either the cam is not right, bad gas and the last thought I had is that between the cam and the pistons, the comp ratio maybe just high enough that it won't light.

It is unlikely I can be useful. The history of this vehicle is too well documented. I will share one story, just in case. As the owner of a one-ton chassis cab flatbed, I had the misfortune of obtaining bad gas with a complete fill-up at a remote station. It took 40 miles before the first symptom appeared. The vehicle was on the road, in a hotel parking lot, and I could not address the issue properly, such as removing the two gas tanks and cleaning them out. No amount of dehydrant or new gas helped. Occasionally it would run, of course always needing to be jumped to get to that point. It was not until I had burned through nearly the entire 40 gal in unpredictable fits and starts that the truck returned to normal. I feel that I was running from one water pocket to the next until finally all was gone. Because of my job on the road, because of my truck stuck on the road, this took months - I fixed and used my second vehicle until resolution. I am sure you have addressed the in-line fuel filter(s). Gas line into fresh gas is brilliant. CC

Thank you lovely lady. I am doing some baking today. Went out and worked on one of the cars this afternoon. I find myself having to think thru a problem with bolt. The retaining on the nut broke and the bolt now just spins. It is in a tight spot and right next to the gas tank. That somewhat limits my options, just requires a little thought.

We were both baking, I did a Big Vege Chili Hot & Spicy, very CALIENTE and also my special rhum carrots cake, and maple syrip squares. What about you, what did you baked?
How many cars you've got and what kind, what years, what type of motor, what kind of equipment etc...
Interesting....you're a mechanic...you have the ability to resolve that kind of problem.... In the past, I did a lot by myself, so I'm sure I could be a very good & sexy helper...:-))
Let me check these bolt very carefully, very closely. I don't think you've got a "Big Problem", we can resolve that pretty quickly.... just replace the retaining on the nut and the bolt should stop to spins. Tell me what you're thinking about it... I have no problem with tight spot ironbutt2, I'm so flexible and adaptable, if you're taking me as your helper, I will be very helpfull for you to go in delicate & sensitiv spot....:-) I don't think it will be an issue even if it's close to the gas tank.
Maybe, we can do that job together....it will be a "Peace of Cake"!!!

I am in the process of making cinnamon rolls. The dough is in the oven with the light on for the second rise (yeast dough). I make a very good spaghetti sauce, my chilli isn't bad either although I don't like it real hot. I am thinking about cookies (double chocolate chip) for the weekend.

I have a 1995 Mercury Cougar that the fuel pump quit in. The pump is in the gas tank so you have to take the tank out. I haven't had the tank out in ten years. I also have a 1996 Mazda Miata that needs the radiator replaced. I have the new one and want the Cougar running before I pull the radiator out. I also have a 1969 Ford 1-ton truck and a 1984 3/4 ton Ford truck. I am still trying to figure out why the new engine in the 1984 refuses to start. I have been a little hamstrung because of working out of town and not wanting to work out in the rain with a battery charger. Electrocution doesn't sound like fun.

I grew up on a farm and learned to work on almost anything. I am a mechanical engineer, but I can generally do anything I set my mind to.

It would be a pleasure to have you help me. Help with tools is an important job for the right person.

I would say that it is something to do with the firewall/anti virus settings at this point. It is going to be a tough nut to figure out since the bulk of the people I follow or try to visit come up with out a problem. There are about four people who's pages just won't come up on this computer.

When/if I figure out what it is, I will pass it along. If anyone else is having a similar problem that is where to start looking.

Spoke to Hughes Net earlier today, they are claiming it is a problem in the satellite modem. They are shipping me a replacement today. We will see what effect that has. I really would like to be able to comment on your pictures and tell you how sexy you really are without resorting to work a rounds.

I wouldn't waste the money if you're paying. It's this system. There are several other people that can't comment on my pics. I do all of this from my phone. I can post pics here all day long. But I can't post over on tit flash. It tells me only jpeg pics are allowed, and that's what I'm posting! I can't send a pic on private chat either. I tried to send you one of my giant legs, doesn't work.
